3D Modeling for Surgical Prep | Virtual Surgical Planning at Penn Medicine

How do 3D modeling and 3D printing relate to reconstructive surgery? At Penn Medicine they’re an integral part of the pre-surgical process.

The Otorhinolaryngology team at Penn Medicine use 3D modeling and scanning technology to vastly improve outcomes. This process is currently being used at Penn for patients needing reconstructive surgery in the head and neck.

VSP involves using high-resolution CAT scans to create custom 3D printed implants so the surgical team can better visualize and prepare for the procedure before it actually happens.

Dr. Rabie Shanti explains the benefits of using Virtual Surgical Planning, including increased precision, shorter surgeries, and less time under anesthesia.
