KU Tampa Surgical Tech students, Yanet Perrera and Amanda Hill share their experience of assisting a cardiothoracic surgeon during a heart transplant while in their clinical rotation. Amanda was assisting in the Procurement Room where the donor’s heart was being harvested as well as several other organs. Yanet assisted two surgeons in the Transplant room while doctors removed the diseased heart from the recipient. The two students share this rewarding experience as well as the impact the KU Tampa Surgical Technology Program has had on their lives and future careers.
Robert Young, KU Tampa Surgical Technology Director, shared that to their knowledge this is one of the first times a surgical technology student has been allowed to participate in a heart transplant case during their clinical rotation. KU Tampa is very fortunate to be associated with and play a key role in the beginning for the promising professional healthcare careers of these highly motivated, excellent students.
